MECAL has recently commissioned a magnetic steel handling system at a major steel distribution centre for the eastern states of Australia.

Some of the challenging requirements of the client included:

- crane driver only operation

- steel slabs of 1.5 x 3.0 meter up to 9 tonnes

- steel plates of 1.5 to 3.2 meter wide up to 12 meter long,

in single or multiple stacks, up to 8.5 tonnes.

To meet this challenge MECAL designed and manufactured a Magnet lifting beam consisting of 4 rectangular magnets and hydraulically operated telescoping arms so as to vary the position of the magnets. This new magnet system improved the productivity by a minimum of 500% when compared with the magnet beam that it replaced.
